Providing Shelter. Empowering Futures.
Our Story: A Community Response to a Hidden Crisis
In 1989, Jim Lenane, Peterborough’s Human Services Director, called attention to local homelessness in a newspaper column. Some were passing through town with no place to go—others were longtime residents in crisis.
His words moved Reverend Gary Hauze to act. Together, they gathered a group of local clergy and community members who shared one goal: create a safe haven for those with nowhere else to turn.
That grassroots effort became the Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter—a mission of hope that still guides us today.
Our Mission.
At MATS, our mission is to empower individuals experiencing homelessness by providing safe housing, compassionate support, and vital referral services. We are dedicated to raising community awareness about the realities of homelessness and advocating for lasting solutions that foster dignity, stability, and hope.
Here to Help.
If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness or housing instability in the Monadnock Region, MATS is here to help. We provide safe, temporary shelter and personalized support to individuals, couples, and families as they work toward permanent housing.
Our team understands how hard it can be to ask for help — but you’re not alone, and it’s okay to take the first step
Impact Starts Here
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, MATS relies entirely on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and local organizations. Your gift directly supports the housing and services our guests depend on.
“I can’t give up on my dreams. Now that I have shelter for myself and my child, I feel that I am moving in the right direction”

The Crisis: Hidden Homelessness in New Hampshire
Homelessness isn’t always visible. In rural New Hampshire, families live in cars, bounce between couches, or stay in campgrounds. The state has seen a 289% rise in unsheltered homelessness since 2019 — and the need continues to grow.
Community Resources
We partner with local and statewide organizations to connect our guests with essential services: shelters, housing, food, childcare, transportation, and more.
